According to Traditional Chinese medicine studies, ”semen” is the precious extract of human body. Excessive nocturnal emission, masturbation, and coitus would cause kidney problems or impotence. In the Western society, especially during the Victorian period, there were many prejudices against masturbation. Most people considered it as the cause of physiological and physical problems. Due to the social environment and conventional concepts, people consider masturbation as a sinful and unhealthy act. It could further result in depression, guilt and harms to marriage. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to give an introduction to the origin of harmism and vicious development of masturbation in terms of the Western and Chinese sexual social cultures respectively. In this literature review, it is expected to rebuild the positive attitude toward masturbation and raise some suggestions toward sexuality education and sex therapy.
