生物發育、組織工程和癌症:幹細胞之導引

摘要


人類基因圖譜的解碼,誕生了生命語言的字典;而今天我們就正如站在學習這套生命語言的起跑點上,蓄勢向前衝。幹細胞已能成功地自胚胎和成年人的組織中析離;這項成就開啟了甚多遠景。下一世紀面臨的最大挑戰將是如何應用一套法則去導引幹細胞按我們的意向進行分化。最佳的學習途徑是先瞭解大自然在生物發育過程中究竟如何運作。若能善加導引,幹細胞可以藉人力掌握重生新的組織或再生新的器官或甚至轉化成不同的組織。但一旦誤用了,也可能導致機能喪失、畸形胎或癌症的產生。由於生物發育,組織再生及癌症都是基於生長有關的基因,我們現在正在將基礎生物發育的知識用來循循善誘幹細胞走上醫學的應用。

The advancement of human genomics has laid down the dictionary of the language of life, and we now start to learn the grammars of this language of life. The isolation of embryonic and adult stem cells has opened many new exciting possibilities. The next challenge in 21st century is to apply the rules to guide stem cells in the direction we desire. The best way to learn is to study how Nature does it, or how development works physiologically. A judicious guidance of stem cells can lead to the regeneration of new tissues or organs that can help patients, or even turn one tissue into the other. The misuse may lead to malfunction, malformation or cancer. Since similar growth related genes are used, we can apply what we learned in developmental biology to tissue engineering or cancer cell regulation. These are the fruits of studying basic medicine and successful applications.
