The health care industry has been under great pressure to deliver higher quality at lower cost. As a consulting service provider to every other clinical department, the performance of the radiology department has a significant impact to that of the whole institute. Today the radiology department is challenged to migrate from the traditional, film-based operation to the modern, digital data/information operation. Several empowering technologies have become more mature to make the vision of a modern film-less, information-driven, virtual radiology department cost-effective. Furthermore, various supporting functions such as on-line knowledge access, computer-aided diagnosis and decision support will become more common tools owing to the ubiquity of the Internet and advancement in pattern analysis and machine intelligence. This article attempts to present a snapshot of an extremely dynamic movement that promises to revolutionize the radiology operation of tomorrow.
