Endoscopic Gastrostomy With Syringe-Assisted Method for Patients With Limited Mouth-Opening

摘要

Patients with head and neck cancer (H&NCa) are at increased risk of dysphagia and subsequent malnutrition. Endoscopic therapies, such as percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy, can be challenging in patients with limited mouth-opening. We evaluated the clinical use of a syringe to facilitate endoscopic therapy in patients with H&NCa with limited mouth-opening. We retrospectively reviewed the records of patients who underwent endoscopic examinations from January 2017 to July 2018 at Changhua Christian Hospital and examined their clinical outcomes. There were 47 endoscopic gastrostomy procedures performed during the period, including 9 patients with H&NCa with limited mouth-opening, who therefore were treated using the syringe-assisted method. Eight of the nine patients underwent successful percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy using the syringe-assisted method. This was the first case series in which syringe-assisted endoscopic gastrostomy was employed in patients with H&NCa. This method was simple and easy-to-apply in a clinical practice setting.
