Using visual art literature published from 1930 through 1980, the present research traced a prominent trend of thought that had to do with an art education idea called ”Free Drawing”. The purpose of such review was to examine the geneaology between the thoughts of art education in mainland China and Taiwan from 1930 to 1960. It was found that the ”Free Drawing” approach of art education had consistently gathered momentum through the war years and survived the migration from the mainland China to Taiwan. In addition, it played a significant role in ushering in the later development of Taiwanese art education.
