Background: In spite of the increasing number of female physicians in Taiwan, their academic performance remains less investigated. The aim of this study is to survey the first authorship of female family physicians in the Taiwan Journal of Family Medicine in 2001-2015. Methods: All the articles published in the Taiwan Journal of Family Medicine from 2001 to 2015 were reviewed. All the original articles, review articles, monographs, brief communication and case reports first-authored by family physicians in Taiwan were included. Descriptive analysis was conducted to analyze the affiliated medical institutions, types of articles, and the amounts of articles by individual authors, stratified by gender of the authors. Results: From 2001 to 2015, the Taiwan Journal of Family Medicine published 212 articles first-authored by family physicians in Taiwan. Of the 212 articles, 87 (41.0%) were authored by women and 125 (59.0%) by men. No obvious increase or decrease was observed in female authorships during the survey years. Most articles authored by female family physicians were original articles and case reports. Female family physicians published fewer short reports or review articles than male authors but outnumbered their male counterparts in terms of productivity (publishing 3 or more articles in the journal during 2001-2015). Conclusion: Female family physicians first-authored approximately two-fifths of the articles in the Taiwan Journal of Family Medicine over the past 15 years, indicating their fairly substantial contribution to the field of family medicine in Taiwan.
