Heartworm infection is now recognized as a potential cause of serious disease in cats. Epidemiological studies indicate that in locations where the infection is endemic in the dog, cats are at risk. The aim of this study was to carry out a seroprevalence survery for the presence of Dirofilaria immitis antigen in household cats. All cases were admitted to the National Taiwan University Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. Serum samples were evaluated using a commercial antigen detection kit (ELISA kit: SNAP(superscript TM) Feline Heartworm Antigen Test Kit, IDEXX Laboratories) and results were analyzed together with information obtained by questionnaire. The overall seroprevalence of feline heartworm infection was estimated 0.5% (1/192). The clinical signs of the infective cat were anorexia, vomit, and azotemia. The result of this study shows that the seroprevalence of feline heartworm disease was low, but it was difficult to perform the differential diagnosis from the clinical signs. The routine feline heartworm infection examination is highly recommended.
