Morphological Studies on Pentastomids of Snakes in Central Taiwan

The pentastomids, or tongue worms, are worm-like parasites. Anterior of adult pentastomid has two pairs of sclerotized hooks, and the mouth is between the middle hooks. The pentastoma commonly infected the respiratory tract and lung of reptiles, birds, mammals, and snakes are the most predominant hosts. Human beings may be infected with pentastoma by drinking the water contaminated with eggs of pentastoma or eating the unboiled meat of snake. Therefore, the importance of pentastomiasis in public health or zoonoses should be concerned. In our previous survey of the endoparasitic infection of snakes in Taiwan, Raillietiella orientalis, Kiricephalus pattoni, and Armillifer agkistrodontis were observed. In the present study, we utilized the light microscopy and scanning electro-microscopy to evaluate the structural properties of the cuticle of these pentastoma.
