Shedding of Feline Coronavirus in the Cats Living in the Same Household with Feline Infectious Peritonitis Cats

Feline coronavirus (FCoV) can cause two distinct diseases known as feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) and mild enteritis. FIP is an immune mediated lethal disease. The virus that causes FIP is currently believed to be originated from the mutation of virus that causes enteritis. In order to understand the persistence of FCoV infection in cats living in multiple-cat households that had a confirmed FIP case, clinical specimens including body effusion, blood, feces/rectal swabs were collected. RT-nPCR targeted on the 3-UTR of FCoV genome was applied for detection of FCoV. Six FIP cats from 5 individual multiple-cat households and 21 cats living in the same household were monitored. Persistently shedding of FCoV for at least 12~18 months was observed in most of the test cats. Irrespective of a period of viremia once observed in some of the non-FIP cats, all the 21 cats were clinical healthy throughout the entire examination period.
