Compared to the conventional paper-back medical record, an electronic one possesses many advantages, and that is why it is widely considered of extremely importance and has been made a medical development focal point by most developed countries. This article introduces the status quo of electronic medical record development in Taiwan, summarizes relevant regulations and policies derived from such process, and even drafts a promotion strategy for 2010-2012 based on current situation and needs. It is hoped that this campaign will accelerate the full-scale adoption of electronic medical records by hospitals and clinics, facilitate the interpretation between the new and old systems, and thereby enhance our overall healthcare quality and the efficiency of medical resource utilization.
