Thirst is a common symptom distress in patients with congestive heart failure, but it is often ignored by nurses. During the month of November 2014, we surveyed 170 patients with congestive heart failure. We found 51% of patients had perceived moderate and severe degree of thirst. Based on results of evidence-based databases searching and deleting irrele-vant and unmet-criteria articles, five evidence-based references were identified for designing protocol. Strategies of protocol were based on evidence references and brainstorming of team members. They were patients' assessment after their admissions, visual stimulus to increase saliva secretion, the use of lemonade ice cube and the application of massage over acupuncture point. During March 20 to April 30 in 2015, the percentage of moderate to severe degree of thirst perceived by patients with congestive heart failure had decreased to 29.5%. It shows this evidence-based protocol could apply as a relief of thirst strategy to patients with congestive heart failure.
