A nurse leader is in charge of a team of health professionals. Without an organizational mission, vision, and work value, the leader cannot efficiently manage and lead the team members, thus affecting the provided healthcare quality. When the crisis is of high concern, a charismatic and influential nursing leader could inspire and lead his or her members to resolve challenges and make progress, thus yielding extraordinary results. Charismatic leadership is a leadership theory advocated by mainstream Western culture. It is relevant in the complex and fast-changing current medical environment, in which nursing professionals and leaders alike must resolve numerous challenges. To elaborate on the meaning and concept of charismatic leadership, this article describes previous empirical studies on charismatic leadership, applies this type of leadership to the profession of nursing, and proposes suggestions as a reference for nursing professionals. In addition, the objective of this article was to encourage nurse leaders to exert their charisma, enable them to deal with team management problems, and help them set an example of successful nursing leadership.
