Self-care is a concept frequently referred to in the theory, the research, and the clinical practice of nursing. However, it has been variously conceptualized and operationalized. The purpose of this paper is to apply the methodology outlined by Walker and Avant (1995) to analyze the concept of self-care. The aims of this concept analysis are to determine the defining attributes, to construct model, related, borderline, and contrary cases, and to identify antecedents and consequences. Empirical referents are also outlined. It is hoped that this analysis can be helpful not only in theory development but also in developing a research project and guiding nursing practice.
