The study described the nursing experience of assisting a patient with schizophrenia to work in a sheltered workplace. The patient was influenced by the negative symptoms of the mental disorder, which in turn induced social function degeneration and poor interpersonal relationship. The duration of care was from January to June in 2008. The data were collected by observations and interviews, and the holistic nursing assessment was conducted in accordance with five major aspects. The major nursing problems found during the hospitalization were: self-care deficit, social interaction impaired, and ineffective family coping: disabling. By communicating with and interviewing the patient, offering active care, and the intervention of multiple nursing measures, the patient's condition was stabilized, and exhubuted significant improvement in aspects such as self-care, interpersonal interaction, and interaction with family, which was a major advancement towards sheltered workplace.
