The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of home care education and telephone counseling on patients' self care, symptom severity, and rate of unplanned readmission in cancer patients with chemotherapy (C/T). A quasi-experimental research was implemented and eighty-four C/T patients were assigned to either an intervention group (n=44) or control group (n=40). The intervention group received home care education and telephone counseling. The home care education was provided during hospitalization and telephone counseling was provided on the 3rd and 7th day after the hospital discharge. Both groups of data were collected by self-care scale and symptom severity questionnaires given at readmission. Statistical analysis included percentage, mean, standard deviation, chi-square test, t-test. The results showed significant difference in symptom severity (t=-6.29, p<.001), self-care scale (t=8.68, p<.001), and rate of unplanned readmission (t=4.022, p<.05) in two groups. The result demonstrates home care education and telephone counseling has effects on the self care ability of cancer patients receiving C/T, and can implement to clinical practice.
