Increasing the Accuracy of Oncology Nurses' Patient Education on Skin Reactions to Targeted Therapies

Clinically, patients treated with targeted therapies sometimes must repeatedly seek hospital treatment because of skin reactions on their hands and feet. However, nurses generally provide no preventive care for these reactions. The accuracy of oncology nurses' patient care education on skin reactions to targeted therapies can be improved to facilitate the care for oncology patients. Oncology nurses' patient care education of skin reactions was determined to be only 46.43% accurate because the nurses had inadequate knowledge about the skin-related side effects of targeted therapies and lacked proper skincare instruments, skin reaction assessment tools, patient education materials on skincare, specialised training, and a consistent management procedure for targeted therapy administration. This study aimed to increase the accuracy of oncology nurses' patient care education of skin reactions to targeted therapies to 95%. To achieve this goal, a management procedure for targeted therapy administration, a six-step skincare kit, an assessment tool for skin reactions to targeted therapies, patient education materials about skincare, and a QR code (that directs patients to skincare information) were developed. Consequently, the accuracy rate of nursing cognitive assessment increased from 73% to 96.33%, the nurses' accuracy of patient care education about skin reactions to targeted therapies increased from 46.43% to 96.43%. Such an improvement can contribute towards the quality of nursing care provided to patients receiving targeted therapies.
