Marvelous Exhibitions in Science and Technology

並列摘要

When the National Science and Technology Museum officially opened on November 9, 1997, one of the main focus was the ten themes of exhibitions in the museum. But staffs in Designing Branches of Division of Exhibition, one nagging thought loomed: would Carlton Beck of the UK Company come back with a follow-up to the other eight themes? The answer came at the end of that month. When the company's contract terminated on December 1 eight new themes were decided to open to new bidding. These eight themes have been designed by five Western design companies to offer a completely different look from the ten themes that have been opened, with an entirely new use of space that is worth taking a detailed look at. We are extremely grateful to the Division of Technology Education and the Division of Visitor Services for their contributions in responsible for the 'Clothing and Textiles' and 'Plastics and Rubbers' exhibition rooms. They helped to make up the shortage of staffs of Designing Branches. The members of these teams spent ten busy months making refinements, contracting, creating and finishing materials, and carrying out communications, an effort which has finally borne fruit in a process which must at time felt as difficult as giving birth. Now with the approach of our first anniversary we are ready to unveil these eight new themes, which are: Computers and Communications; Utilization of Water Resources; Biological Technology; Plastics and Rubber; Air Navigation and Aerospace; Transportation and Civilization; Clothing and Textiles; and Mitigation of Natural Hazards. The IMAX 3D Theater The IMAX 3D theater began operation on November 9, 1997, and there were three movies which have been shown: ”Flight of the Aquanaut” (a 2D movie), ”L5: First City in Space”, ”Deep into the Sea”. Visitors are always amazed by the huge screen which measures 17.23m in high and 23.66m in width and by the effects of the hi-fi audio system. Together it makes for a startling new breakthrough in cinema enjoyment. As the visitors sit expectantly in their seats the projectionist is busily getting everything ready in the projection room at the back of the theater. Everything has to be done perfectly the slightest mistake can cause everything to go wrong. But all goes smoothly, and as the visitors take off their special 3D viewing glasses, and the glasses-washing is another hard job for the workers. The air conditioner in the projection delivers a strong flow of cold air to cool the super-hot lamps of the IMAX projector. The offices for the theater are also the most remote in the museum buildings,, another reason to be grateful to the staff of Cinema Branch and all they have done. Coming Soon: the Multimedia Theater Our multimedia theater is scheduled for completion in this coming December. This theater combines audio-visual, computer and film technology, hardware and software to raise the viewing experience tremendously for museum visitors. The multimedia theater features 93 computer terminals for its 186 seats. Each pair of viewers uses one terminal to choose the direction of the story-line each time it reaches a key turning point. The votes are tolled and the movie proceeds based on the viewers' choice. Different selections will lead to different conclusions to the film. Five topics have been developed so far for the multimedia theater: Transportation Technology; Biotechnology; Communications Technology; Construction Technology; and Manufacturing Technology. What other topics will be available for visitors in the future? What will the next main feature in the Multimedia Theater be? And what else will the theater have to offer viewers? Time will tell.
