Analysis of Vegetation Distribution in the Yangminshan National Park Using Aerial Photographs and GIS

Vegetation maps not only show the vegetation formations of an area, but also provide information about vegetation distribution and sizes. Therefore, vegetation maps are considered as a basic ecological data, and are useful for analyzing relationships between vegetation and environment. This study used aerial photographs and satellite imageries to map the vegetation distribution of the Yangminshan National Park according to the vegetation classification protocols specified by the National Vegetation Diversity Inventory and Mapping Project. GIS was used to evaluate the effectiveness of protected areas, and to analyze the relationship between land covers and environmental factors. Results showed that evergreen broadleaf forests dominate the Yangminshan National Park. Other characteristic vegetation formations include arrow bamboo bushes and grasslands. Nevertheless, human disturbances such as farmlands and developed areas also exist. Protected areas, which have very minor human disturbances, have effectively preserved parts of the characteristic vegetation formations as protection cores. Vegetation formations and land used were affected by environmental factors. Developed areas generally located at flat leeward areas at lower elevation adjacent to rivers. Arrow bamboo bushes and grasslands, on the other hand, often located at windward areas with high elevations and steep slopes.
