Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a common complication among patients underwent total knee replacement (TKR). This study evaluated the incidence of deep vein thrombosis one week following the total knee replacement with bilateral lower extremity venography. During the half year interval from June 2001 to January 2002, 53 patients (17 males and 36 females, aged 39 to 83 years old with mean age of 68.7 years) underwent TKR were investigated. Bilateral lower extremities venography for each subject was performed before and one week after the operation. The group of male and female was reevaluated separately. The total incidence of DVT after TKR is about 64%. The tabulated incidence is 47% (8/17) and 72% (26/36) in the male and female group, respectively. According to our study, females are more susceptible to DVT after TKR than males. It also shows the incidence of DVT after TKR is high with incidence of 64% of patients suffered from it.
