The Development and Design of Multiple Purpose Bag for Outbound Tour Guides

The travel industry plays an important role in the global economy and is regarded as one of the megatrends for the 21st century. The maor responsibilities of a tour guide during international tourism operations is to ensure the safety of all tourists, as well as the successful progression of the tour itinerary. During tours, the tour guide has to maintain access to relevant portable and functional tools or materials, to increase customer satisfaction and service quality of the tours. This study aims to design a multipurpose bag for international tour guides, by investigating what they consider as the functional requirements of carry-on bags and their preferences such bags. Experienced tour guides are selected to participate in semi-structured interviews, through which their work experiences, personal preferences and uses of carry-on bags were investigated. Objective Tree methodology was then used to establish design objectives by integrating the content analysis of the interview results and product analysis. The optimal design philosophy and plans for future product development were thus determined. The study concludes with four major design principles to satisfy international tour guides' requirements of a portable carry-on bag: functional, expressive, aesthetic, and multipurpose. In addition to providing reference for carry-on bag design, the surveys and analyses employed in this study can also serve as a basis for future product development projects in the travel and tourism related fields. Improvements in tourist satisfaction and of tour operations are expected to create added benefits for the whole value chain with the development of this study. The focus on the front-line service workers in the travel industry, as in this study, may help the industry to improve tourist satisfaction and tour operations and further create added benefits for the whole value chain.
