In retrospect, it was generally considered that Hong Kong was deeply affected by Taiwan in the field of belles lettres. As a matter of fact, there had been close interaction between Hong Kong and Taiwanese writers in the 1950s. However, it was Hong Kong literature that profoundly led and guided Taiwanese poetry in the introduction of modernism. Quite a few famous Hong Kong writers came to Taiwan during 50s and 60s. Among them, Yip Wai-lim (葉維廉), who wrote, reviewed and introduced theories, was the most active. Yip did contribute significantly to the cross-regional literary dissemination. Taking a close look at Yip's early critical essays and related literary documents, this study focuses on recapturing Yip's visionary efforts in introducing and promoting modernist poetry, new criticism, and surrealist aesthetics during the 30s and 40s.
