Government-business relationships do not necessarily carry negative connotations as far as national development is concerned. This commentary aims at examining the nature of government-business relationships in the development process of advanced countries. The author argues that government-business relationships have played critical roles in the ventures of systematic and large scale economic development projects commonly pursued by advanced countries. Then, the pattern of governmentbusiness relationships in Taiwan is compared. Questions related to its implications for political, economic, and social development in Taiwan are also raised.
