An Investigation of the Use of Safety Needles in Clinical Practice

Several countries have established laws requiring the use of specific medical equipment to ensure a safer hospital environment. On 5 December 2011, the Legislative Yan of the Republic of China published a statute to encourage hospitals in Taiwan to increase their use of safety needles over the following 5 years. Up to now, 4 kinds of safety needles (safety intravenous catheters, no-needle injection connectors and extension tubes, free-needle intravenous infusion sleeves, and safety sheath empty needles) have been reimbursed under the Bureau of National Health Insurance scheme in Taiwan. However, to best prevent needle-stick injuries, it is also important to determine the difficulties experienced by medical staff in their daily practice after receiving in-service training according to this policy. Here, we present the problems experienced by healthcare workers when using safety needles in Taichung Veteran's General Hospital, in order to assist other hospitals in implementing this national healthy strategy.
