A Study of the Relationship between Television Viewing Behavior and Health Status among Children in Central Taiwan

The purpose of this study is to investigate the correlation between television (TV) viewing behavior and health status among children. The questionnaire survey method was adopted. The research tool was a self-developed questionnaire titled ”survey on TV viewing behavior and health status of children”. Based on multi-stage simple random sampling, this study selected a total of 1,063 children aged between 4~6 from six cities/counties in central Taiwan, including Miaoli County, Taichung City, Taichung County, Changhua County, Nantou County, and Yunlin County. Data collected from these children were analyzed using descriptive statistics and inferential statistics. The main results found are as follows: 1. Children's TV viewing behavior showed good status. 2. (1) Girls, with a normal body build, without near-sightedness of children had better TV viewing behavior than boys, those with other types of body builds, with near-sightedness. (2) Children living in Taichung City had better TV viewing behavior than children living in other cities and counties. (3) Children who watched TV no more than five days a week had better TV viewing behavior than who watched TV 6-7 days a week. (4) Children who watched TV less than one hour a day, less than two hours on a holiday had better TV viewing behavior than those who watched TV more than one hour a day, more than two hours on a holiday. (5) Children with only one TV set in the household, no TV set placed in the dining room or the bedroom, no access to cable TV had better TV viewing behavior than those with two or more TV sets in the household, with a TV set placed in any of the two places, with access to cable TV. 3. The variable of children's body builds could best predict children's TV viewing behavior. 4. Children's TV viewing behavior had predicting power for their physical, mental, and social health as well as overall health status. Among these aspects, children's overall health status could be better explained by children's TV viewing behavior. According to the study outcomes, some concrete suggestions were brought up as references for caregiver and preschool settings.
