Internal Printed Monopole Antenna for LTE/UMTS /WLAN/WiMAX Multi-Network Operations for a Wireless USB Dongle Applications

A planar meander-line monopole antenna was designed for wireless Universal Serial Bus (USB) dongle devices. The proposed antenna shows broad band characteristics and supports the LTE, UMTS, WLAN and WiMAX services. The proposed antenna consists of a meander shaped patch and an L-shaped open end stub. The antenna is fabricated on an FR4 substrate of permittivity of 4.4, thickness of 0.8 mm, loss tangent of 0.0245 and fed with 50- microstrip line. From the simulated and measured return losses, the 10 dB operating bands cover the LTE/UMTS/WLAN/WiMAX application bands. The designed antenna measures 12.5 (W) × 12.5 (L) × 0.8 (H) mm^3, which is suitable for compact USB dongles. The measured 2:1 bandwidths of the voltage standing wave ratio are operated between 1710 MHz to 2690 MHz for LTE/UMTS/WLAN/WiMAX bands. The measured peak gain is 3.78 dBi, and efficiency is higher than 77%. The radiation patterns are also nearly omni-directional. The antenna with the simple structure and good performances is suitable for applying in LTE/UMTS/WLAN/WiMAX systems of small size.
