The Category of Time in Mapping Cultural Changes in Contemporary Estonia

並列摘要

This article attempts to uncover some theoretical starting points related to categories of time for the purpose of mapping cultural change in contemporary Estonia. First of all, the analysis focuses on those manifold levels in the order of time that appear in a transitional society, e.g. how social spheres move at differing speeds and how one's experience of time is structured according to a traditional-modern-postmodern scale. Secondly, three modes for interpreting the past are considered in more detail: dominant, popular and counter-memory. Thirdly, the article treats the transformation of a mechanism essential for ensuring cultural continuity: the rites of passage. Finally, there are some answers to the question whether post-Socialist Estonian cultural reality creates a postmodern experience of time.
