Word Phonetic Structure and Allomorphic Case Endings in Komi Allomorphic variation of Komi case endings depends on: (1) whether the final sound of the word is (a) a vowel or a consonant or (b) a velar or a palatal sound, and (2) the quality of the vowel of the preceding syllable. Depending on the word final sound being a vowel or a consonant, four kinds of allomorphs can be distinguished which may differ by: (a) presence/absence of suffix-initial vowel, (b) presence/absence of suffix-initial consonant, (c) quantity of the suffix-initial sound (single or double consonant, long or short vowel), (d) quality of the suffix-initial consonant. The allomorphic variation of Komi case endings, which is due to apocope of the stem vowel, has its roots in the Proto-Permian period.
