摘要

Historical Linguistics and the Dimensional Language Approach. Notes on 21^(st)-Century Research on the History of the Hungarian Language In this short essay - based partially on the present state of Hungarian historical linguistic research - I discuss the following subjects: 1. The basics of a dimensional approach to language and its relation to historical linguistics. 2. Efforts to integrate various dimensions in linguistic enquiry. 3. Changes in the prestige of historical linguistics and its ＂rehabilitation＂. 4. Integration, specialization and division of labour in historical linguistics and in its border areas. 5. New endeavours in Hungarian historical dialectology and historical sociolinguistics, further plans regarding research and higher education. 6. Two branches of Hungarian historical dialectology: diachronic enquiry based on a philological study of linguistic records and geolinguistic research. 7. A brief review of some successful areas of Hungarian historical linguistic research.
