Background and Purpose: To evaluate the complications in patients undergoing stapled hemorrhoidectomy. Methods: From March 2001 to June 2004 a total of 200 patients who had undergone stapled hemorrhoidectomy were enrolled into this study. There were 117 men and 83 women with a mean age of 44 years. Second degree hemorrhoids were diagnosed in 17 patients, while third degree hemorrhoids were found in 128 patients. Retrospective chart review was used for data collection and further analysis. Results: The overall complication rate was 31%. The incidence of post-operative bleeding was 2.5%. The incidence of acute urine retention was 26.5% and of post-operative anal stenosis 2%. Conclusion: In experienced hands, complications after stapled hemorrhoidectomy can be controlled and the incidence reduced.
