The Influence on Marital Power when Couples are Treated for Marital Violence

Objectives: This study explores the influence on marital power of treatment for marital violence among couples. Methods: A total of 70 couples participated in the Relational Development Program, a treatment model for couples who have experienced marital violence. All of them received ordinary psychiatric therapy and were invited to participate in an additional course of marital therapy. Of the 70 couples, 29 (41.4%) of them completed this additional therapy. Pre-management and post-management marital power was measured using the marital power clinical rating scale, which consists material, affection and resource subscales. Using this approach, we determined each couple's initial marital power pattern, which consisted of husband-dominant (n=31), wifedominant (n=5), egalitarian (n=27) and divided power (n=7). Results: The management model was found to have an influence on the marital power pattern. Specifically, among husband-dominant couples, the wife's power was increased and husband's power was decreased. Furthermore, among egalitarian couples, the affection power of wives in this group was increased. Among the wife-dominant couples, the affection and material powers of the husband were increased. Finally, among the divided-power group, the husband's affection power was decreased and the wife's resource power was increased. Those couples that completed marital therapy did not show a more significant change in marital power compared to couples who did not complete the program. Conclusions: The influence of the couples' treatment on the marital power was: 1) to decease the husband's power and to increase the wife's power across all power dimensions; 2) to produce a better balance in marital power; 3) egalitarian couples were found to be more adaptive in terms of their marriage; and 4) there was enhancement of the individual adjusting abilities of the wife among divided-power couples.
