The prevalence of elder abuse continues to increase along with the expansion of older population. Many factors contribute to elder abuse which will not only harm older adult’s physical health, but also their psychological health. The Family Violence Prevention Law has defined elder abuse as the third category of domestic violence, Therefore, this issue should be treated more actively. Clinical staff provides the first line medical care for the abused elders, so they require sufficient and correct knowledge and ability to identify and provide care for these sufferers. This paper reviews literatures related to the definition, prevalence, types, causes, assessments, and preventive intervention of elder abuse, to be referred by health professionals dealing with elder abuse.
