Oropharyngeal dysphagia (OD) has become one of most common health care issues in modern society, especially among the elderly. It can be influenced by many extrinsic and intrinsic factors, for examples, stroke, neurological disorder, and aging per se., and resulting in high rate of long-term placement of nasogastric tube. In this article, we introduce a swallowing assessment and intervention model in home setting for patients with OD in the Taipei City hospital and its outcome. We hope to draw attentions from the general public and medical professionals to this emerging health care issue, and work together to help the OD patients so that they can increase their oral intake safely, improve their long-term quality of life, and avoid possible problems arisen from unnecessary long-term placement of nasogastric tube.
