As a young poet, Cheng Chou-yu was fond of mountaineering and this activity inspired him to write a large number of charming poems. Drawing pieces from Cheng Chou-yu's Collected Poems I, this article analyzes the contents and techniques of these mountain poems. It attempts to illustrate that the poems go beyond the then fashionable theme of nostalgia; moreover, they serve as an escape from the political interventions of its times. By these mountain pieces, Cheng Chou-yu has managed to achieve a poetic style different from that of his earlier works.
