Fostering university students' employability skills: A case study of a short-term work-based university-industry collaboration project in Taiwan

The paper aims to explore whether a short-term work-based university-industry collaboration project enhances university students' general employabilit and other skills, particularly for language majors. This study was a qualitative pilot study using an in-depth interview to collect research data. The results showed that the participants perceived improvement in 8 employability skills, including: (1) working attitude, (2) stress resistance, (3) communication skills, (4) professional knowledge and skills, (5) learning motivation, (6) teamwork, (7) technology skills, and (8) ability to spot and solve problems. Participants also improved on time management ability, information skills, and crisis management abilities despite the contradicting result for interpersonal skills. The results suggested that such a project facilitated students' employability skills while offering interdisciplinary learning opportunities. However, due to the limited number of participants, research results may lack generalizability. In addition, the present study investigated the perceived effectiveness of the university-industry collaboration project on university students' employability skills. As a result, the recruitment of more participants and the use of other means of measurement are suggested for future research.
