The effect of urbanization on the air temperature of metropolitan Taichung was studied based on the annual mean values of air temperature that collected from the meteorological stations of Taichung and Pengchiayu from 1949 to 2005. Pengchiayu is a small island far from northeast of Taiwan and is considered to have the least impact from modern urbanization. From the comparison between urbanization factors and the difference of air temperature obtained from these two meteorological stations, the results can be summarized as follows. Urbanization increased the energy consumption, population density, the number of vehicles, and the roadway area of city. These factors had a significant positive effect on the increase of air temperature and resulted in the decrease of paddy field area. The urbanization of metropolitan Taichung resulted in the increase of, the air temperature was about 0.005℃ per year since 1949, but it rose rapidly to 0.036℃ per year since 1983. According to the rate of urban development at metropolitan Taichung, the predicted annual mean value of air temperature will be 25.0℃ in 2050.
