英語普通名詞的語言形式與語意變化之學習

Learning Form and Meaning Variations of English Common Nouns

This paper studies the form variations of English common nouns and their different uses in sentences by applying Carlson's observation that the meaning of common nouns relies on their spatial references and their semantic interaction with verb phrases denoting temporary or durative situations. Besides focusing upon Carlson's concepts, the research works with Link's semantic distinction between count and non-count nouns, Bach's classification of verbs into types, and Krifka et al. 's analysis of the relation between kinds and properties to suggest ways for Chinese native speakers to accurately distinguish usages of various forms of common nouns. The study in the paper shows how semantic studies of English by linguists can be applied to provide EFL learners a way to understand important distinctions underlying native English usage.
