A 39 year old female patient reported that the right side of her face felt numb for about 2 weeks. The patient has had diabetes for 5 years and was taking western medicines to treat it. On August 1, 2003 the right side of the patient's face suddenly felt numb and she was unable to close her right eye. The western medical diagnosis was facial paralysis. After taking anti-inflammatories and analgesics for about one week she felt no improvement and even began to feel pain. Thereafter the pain got worse and even affected her sleep. The patient experienced positive results after receiving a course of acupuncture treatment. After one course of treatment the degree of recovery was about a month ahead of what is expected after one course of western treatment. In addition, in the course of treatment it was discovered that TB-17 (yi feng) is the point of choice for the treatment of facial paralysis.
