In Southeast Asia the incidence of chronic hepatitis and liver cirrhosis is extremely high. In Taiwan the death rate due to these diseases is about 23.53 percent. Liver cirrhosis is due to severe liver inflammation leading to fibrosis of the liver, which when severe causes the surface of the liver to become bumpy like a bitter melon. In addition other problems can develop, such as esophageal varices, ascites, which can lead to peritonitis, and hepatic coma. Further progression leads to liver failure and death. Among those diagnosed with liver cirrhosis there is about a 5 percent chance of developing liver cancer. Treatment and prevention of liver cirrhosis depends on knowing how to take care of one's health along with early detection and early treatment, thereby ensuring long lasting health and happiness.
