Nie Bao, born in the middle/late period of the Ming Dynasty, followed Wang Yang-Ming's theory and respected Wang, who had been dead in Nie's time, as his teacher. In the book ”Biographies of Confucian Scholars in the Ming Dynasty” Huang Zong-Xi categorized him into the Jiang-You School. Nie Bao disagreed with the theory of existent conscience from Wang Ji, another scholar of Wang Yang-Ming's doctrine, which misled pedants to rampant Zen. Therefore as the first dissentient Nie Bao rectified Wang Yang-Ming's theory on the basis of its original spirit by integrating academic thoughts of the Song Dynasty, leading descendent scholars to stabilize the status of Wang Yang-Ming's discipline in the academia.
