Using the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (Chinese version) to Detect Malingering

摘要

The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2) is one of the most commonly used objective personality test in clinical settings and its utilization in the detection of malingering attracts much research. The Chinese version of the MMPI-2 was published in 2003. A new validity scale called the Chinese Infrequency Scale (ICH) was created due to the weak support of the validity of the original F scale in Chinese population. However, there seems to be a lack of research on the utilization of the MMPI-2 (Chinese version) in the detection of malingering. The purpose of this research project was to investigate the validity of using the infrequency psychopathology scale (Fp scale), Gough's Dissimulation Index (F-K index), Dissimulation Scale (DS), and ICH of the MMPI-2 (Chinese version) in the detection of malingering. There were two independent studies and both used simulation research design. Study 1 consisted of 73 honest respondents and 121 simulators feigning psychotic. MMPI-2 (Chinese version) was administered to each participant. Results indicated that the above scales showed significant difference between group means. Discriminant analysis and receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC curve) statistics were performed. The best cutoff scores were also estimated. In order to cross-validate the above findings, Study 2 was implemented the same as Study 1. Study 2 consisted of 30 honest respondents and 40 simulators feigning psychotic. The results were similar to that of Study 1. In conclusion, the result of this research project supported the tentative utilization of the Fp scale, F-K index, DS, and ICH of the MMPI-2 (Chinese version) in the detection of malingering. As this was a simulation research design study, more research will be needed by using clinical samples.
