Chinese Opera Monthly keeps first-hand records and discourses of the performance of Peking Opera in Taiwan from January 1977 to July 1990, covering everything from performance dates, actors, repertoire, troupes, to venues, types, and reviews. Thus it truthfully reflects Peking Opera in its heyday in Taiwan. Whereas Peking Opera suffers greatly during the Cultural Revolution in Mainland China, it thrives in Taiwan, as witnessed by the documents found in ”Chinese Opera Monthly”. This study intends to analyze the aim of the ”Monthly” and especially the contribution of its various documents to our understanding of the traditional genre.
