論陳子展近代文學史之時代意義

摘要

陳子展是繼胡適《五十年來中國之文學》一書，探討晚清至民國時期的文學活動後，第一個以近代為題，討論其時文學變遷現象，並完成二部近代文學史著作的第一人。他在《中國近代文學之變遷》中，將光緒二十四年（1898）戊戌維新運動定位為近代文學的起始年，主要是著眼於從這個時期開始，中國才有一點近代的覺悟。也因為這樣的覺醒，近代文學才出現了「變遷」的可能，成為他在著作中論述的主軸。他的《最近三十年中國文學史》則深化擴充了前作的內容與篇幅，不僅呈現出陳子展的近代文學史觀，也完整說明了近代文學發展的概況與演變的軌跡，因而成為二○年代以來研究近代文學史的重要著作。陳子展的兩部近代文學史著作，主要成就在：一、提出近代文學起源於戊戌維新時期，二、近代文學基本框架的建構，三、將翻譯文學與敦煌俗文學納入文學史框架等方面，本文即從這三個部分來分析陳子展這兩部著作，並與胡適的《五十年來中國之文學》做一因革的比較，藉此說明其著作在突破前人說法，開創一家之言所取得的劃時代之意義與價值。

Following Hu Shi' book 《Chinese Literature in the Last Fifty Years》 on literary activities from the late Qing Dynasty to the early Republican period, Chen Zi-Zhan was the first person to discuss contemporary literary development and complete two books on the history of modern literature. In his book 《The Development of Contemporary Literature in China》 he regarded the 24th year of the Guang Xu reign (1898), in which ”The Hundred Days' Reform” took place, as the start year of contemporary literature mainly because it was in this year that the Chinese started to awaken to Modernism. Change and development, the main theme in his works, was made possible in modern literature because of the awakening. His book, History of Chinese Literature in the Past Thirty Years, which expanded the content of his previous books, not only elucidated his views on literature but also thoroughly presented to us how modern literature developed and evolved, and hence has become a pioneering work on the history of contemporary literature since the 1930s. The main achievements of Chen's two books on the history of modern literature were as follows. First, he contended that modern literature originated from the movement, ”The Hundred Days' Reform.” Second, he constructed the framework for contemporary literature. Third, he included translation literature and Dun Huang popular literature in the framework of literary history. My essay will analyze the two books from these three points of views and compare them with Hu Shi's book, 《Chinese Literature in the Last Fifty Years.》 I hereby explain the significance and value of his books in bringing forth new arguments and creating a landmark theory.
