In order to link theory and practice, the Center for Teacher Education at Tzu Chi University encourages student teachers to engage in the Schweitzer Educational Service at a remote school in Hualien. This study used students' feedback questionnaires, student teachers' reflective journals and service experiences of learning growth, service-learning efficacy questionnaires and researchers' notes to analyze participation in the program and the effects of service-learning on 19 student teachers. The study found:Schweitzer Educational Service strengthens understanding of the impact of social and cultural capital on students in rural areas; increases positive attitudes among students in rural areas toward summer learning courses and reduces summer learning loss; student teachers become deepened in the role of teachers, teaching efficacy and professional knowledge of teacher career development, and strengthen their service-learning efficacy. In the end, we made several suggestions for other teacher training institutions and those interested in planning field studies and service plans in the future.
