The present study is an attempt to shed some light on the role of religion in contemporary American society, with a special focus on the religious outlook and its influence on the political vision and policy-making decisions of the current president of the United States, George W. Bush. In so doing, it has been necessary to examine the nature of Bush's religion and the conservative political agenda which he has promoted, both during his tenure as governor of Texas and during his presidential administration. The study has made use of a number of political speeches made by both Clinton and Bush, including the former's inaugural speeches, his state of the union addresses, and his farewell address. In addition, for President Bush, it has been possible to drawn upon several speeches made at critical times in the ongoing war on terrorism, as well as his second inaugural address and his speech before representatives of the European Union in February 2005. In so doing, the author has attempted to highlight the evangelical basis in the new presidential rhetoric.
