當全球化市場逐漸成為單一市場使其競爭更為劇烈，使產品之間的品質與績效差距逐漸減少，但在供應鏈實務中，並非每項供應鏈活動皆能被完美的解決，Stratton及Warburton (2006)即在其全球供應鏈之研究中，提到供應鏈活動中低成本與快速回應兩者之間存在著一定的抵換關係(trade-off)。而今日全球市場競爭日益加劇且顧客期望逐漸升高，企業必頇更加注意其供應鏈之運作，才能突破困境（Wang及Shu,2007）。因此，如何解決及發現供應鏈管理上之問題，就顯得格外重要，尤其在各國環保意識的抬頭下，企業並須重新思考該如何更有效能及有效率地建立綠色供應鏈，並在符合環保的規範下去創造最大的利益。 供應鏈(Supply chain)與綠色供應鏈(Green supply chain, GSC)最終內容都是以不同的流程與活動將產品與服務之價值傳遞給最終消費者。最大的異同則是綠色供應鏈管理(Green supply chain management, GSCM)之主要目標為藉由以環境保護為最大的執行政策觀點來看。
