Hakka ethnic identity and overseas Hakka are two major topics within Hakka research. French Polynesia, a French oversea collectivity, is a multiethnic and multicultural area with four ethnic groups: the Polynesians, known as the Indigenous people, the French, from metropolitan France, the Hakka people and the so-called "Demis". This paper, excluding data from related documents, is based on interviews on overseas Hakka in French Polynesia. It focuses on analyzing the identity of Hakka in French Polynesia and aims to draw more attention to the ethnic relations between the Hakka and the other ethnic groups. The paper starts with an historical analysis of the identity process of the Hakka in French Polynesia. Next, from a constructuralist point of view, the research will discuss the actual Hakka identity. Finally, the paper will analyze the Hakka culture-producing, cultural development and cultural change in French Polynesia.
