For some uncooperative young or disabled children, dental examination and treatment can only be carried out under general anesthesia. For safety reason, patients receiving dental treatment under general anesthesia should admit to a ward. However, dental treatment under general anesthesia without admission to a ward can also be arranged. This procedure will avoid some process for hospitalization and is less expensive than conventional procedure; however, not all children are suitable for the procedure. This article discusses the criteria for patient selection, indication, contraindication, pre-operative evaluation, post-operative care and complication of the procedure. This procedure can be safe and successful, if the patient is carefully selected.
