Rampant caries is one of the most common dental diseases in Taiwan. Dentists make every effort to restore severely destroyed primary anterior teeth for preserving the teeth. This article reviews the materials of short posts, the fabricating methods, and the comparison of the posts. The results show that composite resin as a material for making short post is inexpensive and time-saving, therefore it is the most acceptable material until now. The major disadvantage of Nickel-Chromiun cast posts and orthodontic wires is poor esthetics, and the fabrication of the latter material is time-consuming. Glass fiber and polyethylene ribbon fiber is still being researched. The factors affecting the retention of short posts include the remaining tooth structure, endodontic filling materials, etching, and adhesives.
