It was been a long time debatfe that the college should train for a specialist or a generalist. Alfred North Whitehead (1861-1947) had discussed deeply in 'The Arms of Education and Other Essays'. This study treats Whitehead's thinking and education theories. From them, we can find some edifications in our current collegiate education. First, the college should both treat for a specialist and a generalist, and the teacher must respect student's self-development and the rhythm of education. Second, the student should learn how to use his learning from school in the society. He has to treasure the knowledge from experience and observation. Last, the teacher has to raise student's interests and motivations. At the same time, he should pay more attention to esthetics and innovation. Whitehead's thinking is large and scholarly. It would be a good reference not only to our collegiate education but to teachers, parents and the society.
