Mountain Hawk-eagle (Spizaetus nipalensis) is the only Spizaetus raptor in Taiwan. Over its distribution rangc in Asia, Mountain Hawk-eagle has two different types of crest. The long-crest type occurs in South and Southeast Asia, and the short-crest type occurs in Japan. According to many sighting, and hunting and specimen records, most of the Mountain Hawk-eagles in Taiwan are short-crested. However, I saw a healthy young long-crested Mountain Hawk-eagle on November 27, 2006 at Si-Yuan, northeastern Taiwan. It was unlikely to have been a released or escaped cage bird. According to indigenous hunters in remote Taitung County, southeastern Taiwan, the long-crested Mountain Hawk-eagle was captured by their elders a long time ago (Yuan-Hsun SUN pers. comm.), but it was very rare. My sighting coincides with such reports. Why these two different morphological types of Mountain Hawk-eagles coexist in Taiwan is still a mystery.
